Meet Elizabeth Knox*
Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Knox.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I truly enjoy helping people develop their voices, and experience the joy and magic of singing. The voice is a tricky instrument, both to use and to teach. The challenges of teaching and performing have been an invigorating part of my life for many years now. I have two degrees in vocal performance from Indiana University and have additionally studied with numerous teachers during my career in order to successfully analyze and understand how the voice operates. In order for my students to get excellent results as quickly as possible, I wanted to learn how best to explain and describe the laws and sensations of superior vocal production. I have a very broad range of musical experience, having sung in many professional musical settings. I’m an accomplished pianist and therefore accompany students during their lessons.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the most challenging areas for me was finding a teacher who was actually able to specifically explain how to get the vocal results I wanted. I became frustrated with many teachers who weren’t able to provide me with the information I was looking for. In my experience, the majority of instructors had not deeply analyzed the many facets that go into producing a top quality sound. For instance, I had a top name teacher who, in order to extend the upper vocal range, repeatedly used the phrase “Up is up!” Instructions like these are not only vague but misleading and can confuse students needlessly. My goal as a voice teacher has been to articulate for each particular student what they need to do, rather than depend on unproductive cliches and catchphrases.
Alright—so let’s talk business. Tell us about River Forest Voice Studio—what should we know?
My business, River Forest Voice Studio, specializes in personalized vocal instruction for a broad range of students. I’m known for focusing on the technical training of the voice in the first part of the lesson and then showing students how to apply this knowledge to get artistic results. I’m proud of the success of all my students and their improvement, as well as the scholarships, competitions and professional positions they have achieved. My approach is thorough and intellectual, focused on engaging the body in specific exercises, so results are guaranteed. I continue to help voice students working in various vocal styles, including musical theater, choral, classical, cross-over, and popular song.

I have had supportive colleagues, both singers, conductors, and pianists who have propelled me forward. I mainly credit my students who I not only teach but enjoy and learn so much from.
